Arrive in the capital of Hungary, Budapest. Our hotel is centrally located and a time to get to know the city is an ideal way of spending your first evening in the city. We will, however, enjoy a drive of the town and visit Heroes Square the most important monument in Budapest. Winter in Budapest is a different experience with Christmas decorations and local markets in their full décor.
After breakfast, we will drive to the beautiful medieval town of Szentendre, still staying on the banks of the Danube river. The town is famous for its Serbian heritage and cobbled stone streets with a pretty central square. Later return to Budapest and visit the castle district in Buda on the other side of the river Danube. In the evening, enjoy sailing on the Danube as the grandeur of Budapest is in full glow with all its main buildings including the Parliament lit up as night falls.
Today, we will drive to the Croatian border first and clear immigrations. Then we will proceed to reach the town of Rastoke where our hotel is located. The drive gets scenic as we ascend the hills and the Crna River (Black river) accompanies us all through flowing in scenic gorges. The town of Slunj which we pass has houses which are built on a water mill and makes for an interesting passing by picture.
In the morning we will visit the Plitvice lakes national park. The walk through the park in the company of the many cascading waterfalls is an experience of a lifetime. The white and black rivers feed the lakes in the park which appear of different color at different times of the day. Enjoy lunch in the surrounding countryside and later enjoy a scenic drive on the Adriatic coast to Opatija. The evening is a good time to walk on the promenade and enjoy local dinner.
Check out early from the hotel and visit the most important caves for stalagmite and stalactite structures in Europe. The Postojna caves are the most visited sight in Slovenia and for obvious reasons. We will enter the caves with a train and then enjoy a walk inside to observe the various formations. After lunch, we will drive to Lake Bled.
In this region of Slovenia crystal clear waters add color to the evergreen valleys. However today we will enjoy a day at leisure starting with a cable car ride to Mount Vogel and later exploring Lake Bled and its surroundings with a Gondola ride on the lake. The evening is free to stroll around Lake Bled.
We will drive back to Croatia but our first stop will be the capital of Slovenia. Ljubljana is a low key capital but is charming and has an interesting town center. We will explore the town on feet and then drive to Zagreb the capital of Croatia. Reach in the evening and enjoy local dinner as we feel the Christmas and New Year spirit to its full.
Zagreb is divided into upper and lower towns and today we will explore the city and visit some of its important sights. There would be the fervor of Christmas all over so might as well enjoy some mulled wine and local food for lunch. In the evening we will continue with our walk in the city enjoying the local markets.
We will board the homeward flight from Zagreb.
