We start this tour where the others end it. No Oslo and No Bergen.. this is especially for those who love nature and love it above all. We will travel in 10 ferries and experience the mad beauty of this most naturally gifted country.
Why, when the Arctic Circle passes through countries like Canada, Alaska, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, do we promote Norway?!
The scenery in Norway above the Arctic Circle is unlike any country on the planet. However, before we set our foot above the Arctics, it is the magic of the Fjordland in Central Norway that will hold your fascination for the first half of the itinerary. The tour is arranged like a road trip with 3 nights amongst the Fjords and 5 nights above the Arctic Circle. Lofoten Islands and Senja at 67.5 deg North will give you an out of this world feel. The mid night sun then is an icing on the cake.
Our international flight will land in Oslo and on clearing immigrations you will be met by our tour leader. We will then proceed to the domestic terminal in Oslo to board a flight to the central coastal town of Alesund. It is a charming art nouveau town with charming buildings by the sea line. On arrival, we will board the coach and head out to our hotel in Alesund.
Our Fjord experience starts with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the Fjord. We will then embark on a road journey which will first take us over the Invvikfjord to the town of Gloppen which is famous for its horse breed, the Fjord Horse. We will visit a horse farm and then we will arrive in the town of Leon. In Leon we will take a troll car to the mouth of the Briksdalen Glacier, the longest glacier in Europe. We will have a chance to see the blue façade of the glacier as we see it towering upwards. A local lunch can be enjoyed in the surrounding villages. Check in to our hotel on the fjord. The rest of the evening is free to walk in nature and spend time with the fjord.
The most scenic fjord in Norway, the Geiranger Fjord is a UNESCO world heritage site. Our day will start with a short drive to the town of Hellesylt on the western end of the fjord. We will take the fjord cruise on the Geiranger passing several abandoned farms on the way. The prime attraction however is the seven sister’s waterfall. The fjord has steep mountain walls on both the sides and that’s the reason it is so dramatic. We will cruise to the town of Geiranger from where the most scenic Golden Route drive will take us up the winding roads of troll’s path with its hairpin bends. We will make several stops on the way to take the pictures of the surrounding breathtaking scenery. In the evening we will arrive at our hotel near the village of Andalsnes on the Romsdalfjord. The hotel is a typical rural hotel.
After a leisurely breakfast, we will commence with our scenic drive to Trondheim. The road will take us through a region of the Norwegian coast which will give you an introduction to the Arctics. Once we arrive at the Trondheim airport, we will board the flight to Bodo above the Arctic circle. Tonight we can try our luck with the midnight sun.
From Bodo, we will take a ferry to reach the village of Moskenes, the southern end of the most scenic Lofoten Islands. We will reach Moskenes by around 1 p.m. and then visit, the tip of the Lofoten Islands. We will take the scenic E 10 highway and stop at tiny villages for pictures and to soak in the surrounding. Dinner will be arranged in the hotel and later we will go to the open sea to catch the mid night sun. Overnight in Svolvaer, a fishing village on the island.
We would wake up late and have a leisurely breakfast. In the morning we will first visit the village of Hennigsvaer where the houses are beautifully located on the bay. Later we will head out to the narrow Trollfjord on a Sea Eagle Safari on a local boat where we would also have a chance to do some fishing. After returning to the hotel we will have an evening at leisure.
We will continue this morning on the E 10 before branching out on the island of Andoya and on it the port town of Andenes. From Andenes, we will first take the ferry on the open sea and then through the Gryllefjord to reach the island of Senja. This island, a cousin of the Lofoten islands gives it tough competition in terms of the scenery but less number of people coming here means greater peace and this is where it is different. We will stop on the way in tiny fishing villages and finally reach our hotel in Senja, which is built as a Rorbu (Fishing Cabins). We will have yet another chance to see the mid night sun tonight.
We will once again make some stops as we get on a car ferry and set sail to the Northernmost University Town in Norway, Tromso. Once in Tromso, we will have a city tour where we will take in the cable car to the top to catch a breathtaking view of this city. The evening is at leisure to enjoy the city and to buy some last minute gifts. Tromso is the Northern Lights capital of the world, however this is summer and the Midnight Sun will make you come back in the winter for the Lights.
After breakfast, we will proceed to the Tromso Airport to board the flight to Oslo and then connect with a flight to India.
