Japan in winter is a journey we have always wanted to create. The season has a quiet charm: the glow of lantern-lit temples, the warmth of wooden houses, and streets dusted with snow. This tour begins with snow-capped Mt. Fuji, continues into the Japanese Alps, and concludes on the island of Hokkaido with the Sapporo Winter Festival as the grand finale.

Arrive at Narita Airport and begin your adventure with a train ride into Tokyo. Spend the evening exploring a lively food district, either trying dishes on your own or joining the group to start your culinary journey.
Take a private vehicle to the Five Lakes region of Mt. Fuji. Winter skies often offer crisp, clear views of the iconic peak. We’ll make several stops to admire the mountain from different vantage points before returning to Tokyo in the evening.
After validating our 7-day JR Pass at Shinjuku Station, we board our first Shinkansen ride to Nagano. Upon arrival, we leave our bags at the hotel and take a private transfer to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. A 30-minute walk through snowy trails leads us to the natural hot springs where the famous snow monkeys warm themselves.
Travel by local train to Matsumoto to visit its historic castle and stroll through the charming town. On our way back, we stop at the Old Clock Museum and continue to Narai, where traditional wooden houses line snow-covered streets. Return to Nagano via the atmospheric Zenkoji Temple, especially striking in the evening with lanterns glowing against its red walls. Enjoy the lively Izakaya scene in Nagano at dinner.
Today we head to Kanazawa by Shinkansen and then take a private transfer into the Japanese Alps to visit Shirakawa-go, a postcard-perfect village of thatched-roof houses blanketed in snow. After enjoying the scenery and a hot meal, return to Kanazawa for a brief old-town tour before heading back to Nagano for the night.
A long but scenic journey takes us north to Hokkaido. After a train change at Omiya, we board the Hakodate Shinkansen to Shin-Hakodate and then continue by local train to the coastal town of Hakodate. In the evening, ride the ropeway up Mt. Hakodate for panoramic night views, followed by a taste of Russian-inspired snacks at a local café.
Start the day with breakfast at Hakodate’s bustling fish market. Travel onward to Sapporo, where we explore the city’s famed snow and ice sculptures. After lunch, continue to Otaru, our base for the next two nights. The old canal-side town, with its charming historic houses, makes for a beautiful evening stroll.
Spend a relaxed final day visiting the renowned Nikka whiskey distillery in the peaceful town of Yoichi. After a tasting session and lunch, return to Otaru to enjoy your last evening sampling Hokkaido’s street food and picking up local treats.
Use your JR Pass for one last train journey to Chitose Airport for your flight home via Thai Airways. Travelers connecting through Tokyo can opt for an overnight stay before their onward flight.
